How Not to Get Bored November 20, 2009

Is there a way not to get bored while swimming laps? I don’t know, if you’re just doing it to keep in shape. But if you like swimming like I do, then its your own entertainment.

I have to say, what gets me through those long hard sets is the thought that i will get to talk to my friends at the end. Sad, but true.

Another way to keep yourself boring is to think about how good you will feel if you do 110 laps instead of 100, then 120 laps instead of 110. Take it slow in little bits of time.

Some advice: If you have a choice, switch up your stroke a lot. It will keep it more interesting.

Hope your not bored!

Winter Swim: An Average Practice November 20, 2009

Winter Swim is very different, because there is a different coach. Unlike my old one, he prefers long sets. Of course, since my old coach didn’t like long sets, I am really bad at them. Luckily my new coach, Brian, said we were going to go easy to get back in shape, for the first week or so. Little did I realize what “easy” is now.

What did we do? Good question. It is fading in my memory because it was so hard.

We had a long warm up, then a 500 easy kick. Next we swam freestyle for a while, doing a 50 on the minute, 100 on the 2:00, 200 on the 4:00, 300 on the 6:00, and so on, all the way to 500 on the 10:00. It was all progressive, or build up, which was not that amazing, but luckily it was a long interval, with plenty of rest.

The next set was not so easy. 75s on the 1:45. In IM order. the easiest one for me was free fly back. The one without breaststroke. Ew. I hate breaststroke.

Getting Out if Shape: Part 2 November 18, 2009

Ok. Winter Swim has finally started. But what did i do to keep in shape? Well, not much. But a few things that i DID do are simple everyday things that could help you too.

The first thing I did was go running. It sounds dumb and painful, but once you get into it, its really not that bad. Of course, when your out of shape because you haven’t been swimming for a while, even 3 miles leaves you sore the next day.

The next thing is take the stairs. When i went to visit my grandma in her apartment, the elevator was tempting. But i took the stairs instead. It can really gelp, especially when you have stairs in your house.

Next: walk. Walking is great for you. You can get out and enjoy the fresh air and feel great without getting sore. You can also get errands done if you have any stores near your house. Even though swim has started again, i am walking home with a friend today and i can’t wait.

Any more ideas for getting in shape?

Getting Out of Shape November 4, 2009

Hey everyone, sorry about the long break, I just had no time to write. Gomy g is sitting next to me. Your can leave a comment saying hi to him, or you can check out his blog at http://supaflyjams.wordpress.com Its pretty jammin.

Anyway, fall swim ended last Wednesday. Unfortuately, winter swim does not start for another two weeks. So what am I going to do to keep in shape? As you may or may not know, when swimming Monday, Wednesday and Friday, you get out of shape over the weekend. So I need some ideas for how to keep in shape for 2 whole weeks, after not swimming for a week already.

I thought about it for a while, and came up with a few ideas, coming next time!!

In the meantime, please comment on any ideas you have for staying in shape when sports take a break!

Thanks!

Suits: Which do you want? October 23, 2009

Which suit do you want to wear for swimming? Probably not a bikini or trunks. But then what? For girls, you probably want to wear a one piece. There are so many colors and pattern to choose from. At the moment, my suit is bright orange and red and yellow swirls TYR. Last year i had a plain dark blue speedo suit. A lot of my friends like Nike suits though. There is no “best” suit. You just have to pick the one that works best for you.

I like bright paterns like this, but many people have solids like this:

I’m not sure if these pictures will show up, but if you want to see some more, one of my favorite sites for shopping for suits is www.swimoutlet.com You should definitely go there for reduced prices on expensive suits if you need a new one.

Different suits are good for different things. Not all one pieces are ideal for swimming. For example, water polo suits are extremely tight. They are made so as not to be ripped or pulled off by opposing teams. But it would be hard to breathe during swimming if you were so restricted by the tightness of the suit. Before you buy a suit online (without trying it on) you should do some research on what it is made for and what it is NOT made for. Be careful; if you have specific size requirements, it is probably a better idea to go to the store and try them on before you buy.

I hope you found this useful. Please comment to tell me about different suits you want me to review or good sites. Thanks!

Wednesday Practice October 23, 2009

Wednesdays practice was pretty hard. I’m still sore. We started off with 21 laps warm up, then moved on to kicking. We did some fasst 50′s then raced 6 25′s free kick. Whew. Then we did PYRAMIDS. One of the hardest sets ever. Help. It was all freestyle. Pyramids are an easy 25. Then a sprint 50, then a 75 easy then a sprint 100. Then of course, back down, so an easy 100, a fast 75, an easy 50 and finally a no breather sprint 25. After a few of those we moved to the same thing except IM order. Yes, VERY hard. We did a few of those, then got a 50 easy as rest. After that, we did a broken 100 IM, which is when You sprint every lap from a dive. Then three laps warm down. Best part of practice. Haha. :)

We had a really hard workout on Wednesday… called The Five Lanes of Death.

The way it worked was that there were five lanes, (obviously) and each one was a different set, all 8-12 laps, and of course, all sprint.

Lane one was eight 25′s butterfly

Lane 2 was four 50′s fly to back

Lane 3 was three 75′s fly back breast

Lane 4 was two 100 IM’s

Lane 5 was a 300 free, and in my opinion the best lane. I started in Lane 4, and we were going backwards, so I did the freestyle last, which, I guess, was sort of good because freestyle is the easiest stroke for me. :)

We also had a great (easy) kicking set. Just 10 laps free to breast. That was nice.

Introduction October 16, 2009

Hey Sea Lions!! My name is Jasmine and I am a  swimmer. At the moment I go to fall swim, every Monday Wednesday and Friday. Here I will post some of the workouts we do. Swimming is amazing for your body because you can get it shape with out all the risks of other sports such as running or basketball, which put a lot of strain on your knees and feet. When you swim you use many muscles, but you probably won’t get injured in the same way unless you run headlong into the wall. Swimming is fun because its a good way for me to connect with friends I might not otherwise see very often, get closer with those I don’t know very well, and of course, make knew friends.

In this blog I will talk about swim terms for those who aren’t familiar with them, do swim suit comparisons (coming soon) and possibly talk about recent pro swimming competitions.

If you have any ideas for pages that you want me to include in this blog, something you’d like to see more of, or you have any ideas for me, please tell me!!! I want to know what you think.

Feel free to visit this blog anytime. Unfortunately, I will probably update only on Monday, Wednesday Fridays, because I have computers on that day. Please comment on my posts, I always like feedback, unless its mean, and please come back to my blog!! Thank you!!

Hmm… my computer teacher said this post was supposed to be 300 words, but at the moment, its only 265 words. Its kind of frustrating, only needing 35 more word, but just not having any! As you can probably tell I am stalling, and adding extra words… Hey Mr. Milstead, I hope this counts!

Thanks for reading this, even though I’ve probably bored you to tears by now….. haha :)

(By the way, I’m up to 312 words!!!)
